The Mississippi State community is filled with sorrow as they mourn the passing of former women's basketball head coach Nikki McCray-Penson at the age of 51.
Dr. Mark Keenum, the president of Mississippi State University, expressed his condolences and recognized McCray-Penson's resilience and dedication to her players and the university, even in the face of significant health challenges. McCray-Penson's contributions to advancing Mississippi State and the state of Mississippi were greatly appreciated.

McCray-Penson, known for her remarkable basketball career, was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Prior to becoming the head coach at Mississippi State in 2020, she achieved numerous accolades, including two Olympic Gold Medals in 1996 and 2000, a successful nine-year stint in the WNBA with three All-Star appearances, and winning the 1997 ABL Championship while being named the ABL MVP.
Hailing from Collierville, Tennessee, McCray-Penson made her mark at the University of Tennessee under the guidance of the legendary Pat Summit. She was a two-time SEC Player of the Year, a two-time Kodak All-American, and played an integral role in securing two SEC Tournament Championships and the 1992 NCAA National Title for the Lady Vols.
Head coach Sam Purcell expressed heartfelt sorrow over the loss of McCray-Penson, highlighting her outstanding coaching skills, leadership, and, most importantly, her role as a loving mother and wife. McCray-Penson and her family will remain in the thoughts and prayers of the Mississippi State community.
